Romania Five-Day Trip Itinerary

I had a Romanian student in a class I taught last Fall. She told me how beautiful Romania was. I didn't need that big of a push. I already wanted to explore more of Eastern Europe especially after my two fantastic trips to Croatia and Bosnia. A quick check of Ryanair flights yield the result of the £4.99 flight to Bucharest, Romania's capital. I wasn't sure if I would actually go, but I was tempted by the super cheap tickets. In December, B. and I booked our tickets for February. We ended up paying £12.99 one way because we waited too long to book. The return was the same, but w chose a convenient time for £34.99. It was still under £50 each for a return.

We booked our accommodations on Airbnb for 20-40 pounds a night, which was affordable and we got our own studio, so we saved up by making light breakfasts!

Romania Trip Itinerary

Bucharest (2 nights) > Brasov (2 nights) + bus ride to Bran for Dracula's castle

> train stop in Sinaia on the way back to Bucharest (1night)

Total cost of trip for six days including flights, trains, accommodation and food £300/each for two people.

All the teas I had there were herbal! 

Massive tip for Romania: pack your black tea (English breakfast + Earl Grey) with you. They don't sell caffeinated tea there only herbal.

Note on breakfast: It's just not a thing! We walked for an hour before we found an egg breakfast. There were some pastries, so we made our own breakfast the rest of the days.

Tips for Muslim Travellers going to Romania: 

Halal food: There were a few places around the old town of Bucharest that serve halal food like Sindibad. The halal choices were Indian, Turkish and Arabic food. So, I just skipped the, all together and had fish and vegetarian dishes.

Hijab: I was wearing the turban style and I felt comfortable walking around. Everyone was very polite and welcoming.

Mosques: There are three mosques in Bucharest, but i haven't visited any because they were out of my way. It was easier to go back to the hotel.

Brasov Two-Day Itinerary (Including Dracula's Castle), Romania

Brasov is a vibrant city with a lot of options. I was only there for two days, so my activities there were very limited. There is so much more to do! I wish I stayed longer. It's three hours by train from Bucharest, the capital. I would have loved to attend the Brasov free walking tour and see the rest of the castles in the area, but I didn't have time. Brasov is also known for the winter sports and skiing, but that's for another visit!

Brasov Old Town

We stayed a 20mins walk from the old town. It was a 5mins bus ride. It's not big, but really nice for a stroll during the day and at night.

It was a nice church. Grand on the outside and simple on the inside.

Restaurants in Brasov's old town

I only got the chance to try two restaurants that were really nice!

Simone has small menu with mostly vegetarian and vegan choices. Very relaxed atmosphere and chic interior. The food was really good!

Bistro de l'Arte is a very pretty, atmospheric spot. They had a selection of well made inventive none alcoholic drinks. My "halal" mocktail was yummy! Their menu was very small, but they had a vegetarian option!

Bran Castle (Dracula's Castle)

It's a 45mins bus ride from Brasov. The bus stops five minutes walk from the castle. There's a little market outside. I got two plates painted in the traditional Romanian way. My only regret is not buying more of them! I saw the same ones in the airport quadruplethe price.

Sinaia Castle

This can be visited on the way to or from Brasov. Make sure you get there by 3pm latest. Last admission is 4pm. We were 5mins late and weren't allowed to enter. It's very grand on the outside though.

Weekend Itinerary for Bucharest, Romania

The reason I even knew about Bucharest was when I saw it as a really cheap option on Ryanair and I Googled it. I read a mix of posts about it. Some praised it and some were haring badly. I was intrigued and I thought it would be a good winter destination with its dark, Soviet and gothic architecture. I didn't think I would have strong emotions about the city, but I really enjoyed it! Even with the bitter cold and the snow. It felt as dark and magical as I wanted it to be. People were nice and the service everywhere was on point! I highly recommend visiting. I would love to go back in the summer or the spring just to see how different it is.

Things to see and do in Bucharest: 

Old Town & Food! 

The old town in Bucharest is kind of small, but it's nice to walk around and take in the different types of Architecture they have there. There are plenty of restaurants and bars there. I only tried the very fancy Caru' cu Bere. It is only two minutes walk from the Stavropoleos Church. I loved the interior of it. The service was on point. Sea food available. Their vegetarian food was nice, but nothing exceptional. The meat dishes looked so tempting! £35 total for two three course meal + drinks + teas

You can venture the old town for the Bucharest: Guided City Tour . It was not happening when I was there, but it seems like a good option to try if you have some time.

Caru' cu Bere

Stavropoleos Church

I loved the architecture and the interior. It's small and can be seen and photographed in half an hour. It was quiet and peaceful. I didn't want to leave. It was so magical with the snow. I think I photographed every detail there. I went before and after breakfast! 

Graffiti in Bucharest

Another thing to keep an eye out for when you are walking around old town and in Bucharest in general in their graffiti. They have various styles that are worth looking at. I couldn't venture out far because of my limited time, but that would be something I will look more into if I am back. 

Herăstrău Park and the village Museum + FOOD! 

A metro ride away took us to the park. The village museum is located inside. The online opening hours showed that the museum was only closes on Monday, but when we arrived on a Tuesday in February it was closed. It looked cool from the outside. After spending a couple of hours walking around and chilling (literally) we went to the restaurant inside the park. They served really yummy sea food. £35 total for two three course meal + drinks + teas

Botanical Garden Museum + Flaffel

The garden was mostly covered in snow, but we just went to the museum inside. We ended up spending an hour there just looking at the illustrations and 20mins walk from there, there is an amazing Turkish restaurants that made some tasty falafel sandwiches and served free tea. It's called Calif.

The River

It's located on the other side of the old town. It was nice strolling beside it and watching the birds walking on the frozen water.

PS. most museums are closed Monday and Tuesday
